South Carolina continues to bear a significant level of cardiovascular disease resulting in an increased incidence of strokes, heart attacks, and heart failure. Carolinas Primary Response is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to educating the public to reduce death and disability related to cardiovascular disease. Nationally, approximately 800,000 people will sustain a stroke each year. Of those who suffer from a stroke, approximately 140,000 will die from the stroke (Centers for Disease Control & Prevention [CDC], 2020. According to data from the South Carolina Department of Health & Environmental Control (SC DHEC; 2017), stroke is the 5th leading cause of death in South Carolina, and nationally the state ranks 6th highest in stroke-related deaths.
